Your website needs to build up increased link popularity in order to attract web traffic from the search engines. They consider a number of factors relating to your website when deciding the page rank and Search ranking. Off site factors are responsible for nearly half of the elements of the search engine algorithm so they should not be overlooked. Link popularity is an example of an off site factor and is becoming more important in many ways than page rank. When you are looking to increase link popularity, you should seek quality rather than quantity - fewer links from sites that are related to your website's niche, and have a reasonable page rank, will outweigh hundreds of links from poor quality low ranked sites.
