Future with Adsense

I have been looking around at the conversations among real people (not just those trying to link to their latest ebook) on whether Adsense is a viable way to earn money online. We believe any income stream needs continual review, and AdSense is no different. There are three major areas of concern:
  • Publishers can make more money by keeping visitors on the site than sending them straight to a clickthrough link
  • That income can be cut off without notice by companies like Google.
  • Publishers have to work very hard to get visitors to their Adsense ads, and outside factors can reduce visitor numbers if the site search engine ranking falls.

Adsense Custom Channels Show You What is Working

Google now offers custom targeting channels for AdSense, an option that allows AdSense publishers to separate out the different google advertising blocks on their web pages. Adwords advertisers can also use the facility to monitor the top performing units and select them for their ads. Here is the official word on creating channels:

'Custom channels allow you to track the performance of specific ad units based on your specified criteria. By pasting channel-specific ad code into your pages, you can track a variety of metrics across a range of URLs. Use custom channels to track the performance of different ad formats, for example or to compare different page topics to one another. To learn how to create and assign custom channels, please read How do I create custom channels?'
